When a liner is no longer an option
Lining depends on the old pipe keeping a shape for the liner to fill. Some Houston laterals have passed that point. Clay tile shifted so far by seasonal soil movement that joints are offset by half a pipe; cast iron that has collapsed flat under a driveway; an old pipe of a material or size that was wrong from the start; or a line that must be larger because the building grew. For these, the choice is between an open trench and pipe bursting, and on a lot with concrete, trees, and a pool on top of the pipe, bursting usually wins.
How the pull works
Two pits are opened, one where the old pipe leaves the building or slab edge and one near the property line or the connection to the main. In a Houston yard, a steel cable or rod string is pushed through the old pipe from one pit to the other. A conical bursting head, slightly larger than the new pipe, is attached at the entry pit with a continuous length of fused high-density polyethylene behind it. A hydraulic rig in the exit pit pulls the cable, drawing the head through the old pipe. The head fractures cast iron and clay outward into the surrounding soil and the new pipe follows into the void. Clay, rock, and what each means for bursting

In expansive clay, the head displaces soil readily, and the fused polyethylene pipe that goes in is flexible enough to ride seasonal movement without opening a joint, because it has no joints. That is a genuine advantage over rigid pipe in a trench. Where the old lateral was laid in a trench cut through limestone or caliche, bursting is attractive for a different reason: the rock trench already exists and the new pipe follows it, so nobody pays to cut rock a second time. In both soils, the pits are the only excavation, and they are placed where they do the least harm.
Protecting what sits above the pipe
The lot features that make an open trench expensive in Houston are driveways, sidewalks at the right-of-way, pool decks, patios, and mature trees whose roots are the reason the pipe failed. Bursting leaves all of them in place. The alignment is surveyed first for other utilities, because gas, water, electrical, and fiber often share the same corridor and the head displaces soil as it passes. Connections, cleanouts, and the tap
The new polyethylene pipe is fused into one continuous length before the pull, so there are no joints between the pits. At each end it is joined to the existing system with transition fittings, and a two-way cleanout is installed at the building end if the property in Harris County did not already have one. The connection to the public main or the existing tap is made at the exit pit under the right-of-way permit, with the city inspector present where required. Each connection is camera-checked and the finished line is videoed end to end before the pits are backfilled.
Permits, timeline, and the paperwork
Bursting in Houston requires a plumbing permit and, for the pit near the tap, a right-of-way permit and traffic control if the street is involved. Utility locates are called in before any digging. How big are the pits for pipe bursting?+
The entry pit, where the new pipe is fed in, is typically a few feet long and wide enough for a worker to stand in beside the old pipe. The exit pit, where the pulling rig sits, is similar. In Houston they are placed in beds or lawn wherever the alignment allows, and both are backfilled and compacted the same day the pull finishes.
Can the new pipe be larger than the old one?+
Yes. Bursting routinely upsizes one pipe diameter, for instance from four inches to six, because the head fractures the old pipe outward and displaces soil. Upsizing in Houston is common for commercial laterals that were undersized when built. Going up more than one size depends on the soil and nearby utilities.
Will bursting disturb my pool or foundation?+
The head displaces soil a short distance around the pipe, and in soft clay that movement can be felt a few feet away.
