Sectional point repair in Houston: when only one spot is broken

A Houston sewer line that has failed in one place does not always call for a full liner. If the inspection turns up a single sheared joint, a short crack, or one offset while the rest of the pipe is intact, a sectional sleeve a few feet long fixes that spot and leaves everything else alone.

The single-defect lateral

Some Houston sewer lines fail in one place. The rest of the pipe is intact, scaled perhaps but sound, and the camera finds one problem: a joint that has opened, a crack running a few feet, a root intrusion at one hub, or a pipe end pushed out of line. Relining the entire run to fix one spot is like replacing a roof over one lifted shingle. A sectional point repair installs a short, resin-saturated sleeve over the defect alone, cures it in place, and leaves the sound pipe untouched. The repair is quick, requires no digging, and costs a fraction of a full liner.

Where single defects come from in Houston

The ground across the CPC Trenchless, LLC territory manufactures single-point failures. Expansive clay heaves in a wet year and shrinks in a drought, and a rigid pipe that spans two soil conditions, such as the grade beam of a slab and the open yard beyond it, cracks or shears at the transition. Foundation piers that lift one side of a house move the under-slab drain with the slab while the yard line stays put, opening a gap exactly at the slab edge. A tree root finds the one joint in a clay tile line that was never fully seated. A driveway poured over a shallow lateral crushes the one section beneath the wheel path. Each of these produces a defect you can point to on the footage, with good pipe on either side, which is the definition of a point repair candidate.

How the sleeve is installed

The crew locates the defect to the foot using the cable counter from the camera inspection and, where the exact position matters for a later excavation, a sonde on the camera head. The line is cleaned and the defect re-inspected. A fiberglass or felt sleeve, cut to the chosen length and soaked in resin, is rolled onto an inflatable bladder. The bladder is worked along the line from the cleanout to the measured footage, pumped up so the sleeve bears against the pipe wall, and left under pressure until the resin sets, which with ambient-cure resins takes an hour or two and with heat takes less. The packer is deflated and removed, and the camera confirms the sleeve is centered on the defect with smooth transitions at both ends. Most point repairs in Houston are finished in half a day.

When a sleeve is the wrong answer

A point repair fixes a spot, not a pipe. If the camera shows cast iron that is channeled along its whole length and the single defect is simply the first place it gave way, a sleeve will be followed by another and another. If the pipe ends at the defect are offset by more than about a third of the diameter, the packer cannot seat and the gap needs to be bridged by replacing that section, usually by a short tunnel at the slab edge or a small excavation in the yard. If the defect is a belly, no sleeve helps. CPC Trenchless, LLC prices the point repair and the alternatives against the same footage so a Houston owner can compare them honestly. Point repairs under driveways and pool decks

The best use of a sectional repair is a single defect under something nobody wants to cut. A crushed section under a Houston driveway, a cracked joint beneath a pool deck, or an open hub under a patio can be sleeved from the cleanout with the concrete untouched. The sleeve is structural once cured and carries the pipe's load at that point; it does not depend on the broken host pipe for strength. Where the defect sits in the public right-of-way near the tap, the same method applies but a right-of-way permit is required even though no digging occurs.

Permits and the record you keep

In Harris County a point repair on a lateral is permitted plumbing work, and the permit is pulled by the contractor. The owner should receive the pre-repair video showing the defect at its footage, the post-repair video showing the cured sleeve, and a written warranty naming the sleeve length and position. Sleeves use the same resin families as full liners, which are engineered for a fifty-year design life. Questions we hear about sectional point repair

How much pipe does one sleeve cover?+

Anywhere from two feet to roughly six. The piece is cut to span the flaw and lap onto intact pipe at each end, usually a foot or more of overlap. A crack confined to one pipe section gets a short sleeve; a sheared joint with displaced pipe on both sides gets a longer one.

Can a point repair fix the break where my lateral leaves the slab?+

Often, if the two pipe ends are still roughly aligned and the gap is small. Foundation lifting in Houston commonly separates the under-slab pipe from the yard line by an inch or two at the grade beam, and a sleeve can bridge that. If the ends are offset by more than a third of the diameter, a tunnel repair at that spot is the honest fix.

Will I need more point repairs later?+

Possibly, and this is the real question. If the camera shows one defect in a pipe with decades of life left, a sleeve is the right call. If it shows one defect today in cast iron that is thin everywhere, a sleeve buys time and a full liner saves money over the next few years. CPC Trenchless, LLC shows you the footage so the choice is yours.

Does the sleeve narrow the pipe?+

Slightly, by the thickness of the cured sleeve, which is a fraction of an inch. The transition at each end is tapered and smooth, and the camera run afterward confirms there is no lip for debris to catch on. On a four-inch residential line in Harris County this has no practical effect on drainage.

How do I schedule a point repair?+

Start with a camera inspection, which locates the defect to the foot and shows whether the surrounding pipe is sound enough to anchor a sleeve. If it is, the sleeve can often be installed on the same visit or the next working day. Call CPC Trenchless, LLC at (346) 644-6780 to set it up. Estimates are free; call now.
