Sewer pipe lining in Houston: a new pipe inside the old one
Cured-in-place pipe lining is the reason most Houston homeowners with failing cast iron never have to break a floor. This page explains which defects a liner cures, which it does not, what the lining day looks like, and what the paperwork should say when it is over.

What a liner solves in Houston ground
The pipe problems that lining fixes best are exactly the ones that are most common under Houston homes. Cast iron that has rusted through along the bottom, scaled on the walls, and begun to leak at every hub, but still runs in a continuous round channel, is the classic case. Clay tile in older neighborhoods, with roots threading each joint and the sections slightly rotated by seasonal clay movement, is the second. Hairline cracks, small offsets, minor infiltration, and a yard line that fails a hydrostatic test without any single dramatic break round out the list. In every one of these, the old pipe can still act as a mold, and a liner cured inside it produces a new, jointless pipe with no digging.
What it does not solve
A liner cannot create shape where there is none. A collapsed section, a joint offset by more than a third of the pipe diameter, or a crushed run under a driveway will not let the tube pass or will cure into a pipe with a pinch point. A liner also follows the host pipe's grade exactly, so a belly stays a belly, holding the same water with a smoother bottom. In Harris County, where flat lots make bellies common, CPC Trenchless, LLC measures the depth and length of each sag on the footage before recommending lining, and separates out any section that needs to be re-laid at grade first. A short tunnel to fix the sag followed by lining the rest is a common combination.
The lining day under a slab house
The job in Houston starts with cleaning. The line is jetted to strip scale and roots, then re-inspected and measured so the liner is cut to the right length and diameter. A felt or fiberglass tube is saturated with resin, loaded, and inverted or pulled into the pipe from the cleanout, a pulled toilet, or a single access point. Air or water pressure holds it tight against the host pipe while hot water or steam circulates to cure it, a process of a few hours that the heat of a Texas afternoon tends to shorten. When the liner is hard, a remote cutter reopens each branch to the bathrooms and kitchen, the line is camera-checked end to end, and water is turned back on. Most homes are back in service the same evening.
Lining the yard line and the right-of-way stretch
From the slab edge to the city tap, lining competes with pipe bursting. Lining wins when the pipe holds shape, when the lot has no room for two pits, when the run passes under a pool deck or mature tree, or when the house sits on shallow rock that makes any pit expensive. The portion of the lateral within the public right-of-way in Houston can usually be lined to the tap, and in some cases the connection to the main is sealed with a short lateral-to-main liner. That portion requires a right-of-way permit and a utility locate even though nothing is dug, because the work touches public infrastructure. The service-area details for lining in this territory are at the CPC Trenchless, LLC lining services page for Houston.
Reading a lining proposal
A proposal for lining a Houston lateral should state the length to be lined and from where to where in cable footage, the liner diameter and type, the resin, the cure method, the number of branches to be reinstated, and the access point. It should name any section excluded from lining and say why. It should include the pre-lining video and promise a post-lining video and hydrostatic test. The design life of a cured-in-place liner is fifty years, and the written warranty should reflect a product built for that, naming the material and footage covered. CPC Trenchless, LLC is listed at the verified CIPP installer profile for CPC Trenchless, LLC as part of a network that publishes installation standards for this product, and the plain-language background on how liners are made and tested is at the national CIPP reference.
Lining after foundation repair
A particular Houston situation deserves its own mention. After piers lift a slab, the drain lines beneath it commonly fail a hydrostatic test, usually at the point where the under-slab pipe meets the yard line. If the break is a clean separation, a tunnel repair at that spot is the fix. If the cast iron throughout is also at the end of its life, lining the whole under-slab system at the same time, while the yard is already open at the grade beam, saves a second mobilization. Questions we hear about sewer pipe lining (cipp)
How thick is the liner and does it reduce flow?+
A residential liner cures to roughly a quarter inch, so a four-inch cast iron line becomes a slightly smaller pipe. Because the cured surface is smooth where the old cast iron was rough and scaled, the lined pipe typically drains better than it did before. Flow is not a practical concern on a house lateral in Houston.
Can the bathroom branches under my slab be lined too?+
Yes. The main line under the house is lined first, then the branch connections are cut open from inside with a remote cutter. Where a branch itself is deteriorated, a smaller liner can be installed into it from the main or from the fixture end. The camera survey decides which branches need it.
Does lining pass a hydrostatic test?+
That is the point of it. A properly installed liner is a continuous, jointless pipe from end to end, so a post-lining hydrostatic test should hold. CPC Trenchless, LLC performs that test and records the result, which is the document a buyer, lender, or foundation contractor in Houston will ask for.
What happens to the old cast iron?+
It stays in place as a form around the new pipe. Even cast iron with holes in the bottom supports the liner adequately, because the cured liner is structural on its own. The old pipe does not need to be removed, and nothing is left exposed under the slab.
How do I find out if my line can be lined?+
Call CPC Trenchless, LLC at (346) 644-6780 to schedule a camera inspection. The footage shows whether the pipe still holds a continuous shape, which is the test for lining, and the proposal that follows is written against the recorded defects. Estimates are free; call now.
